The One That Got Away
He came back one day and didn't find her. She left; she took his heart with her. It's so strange, isn't it? They've been together for five years. Why would she run away from him now, and in such a peculiar way?
They first met in a bar. He was tipsy, and she had her eyes on him all night. She made the first move and jeopardized her ego while talking to him. "I wanna know you," that's all that came out when she opened her mouth. They talked and laughed for several hours that night and didn't get enough of each other. They had a lot in common. It's like he was talking to his inner self; like she was his lost soulmate. She felt like she was invading a military bivouac; like she was swimming deep in the dark blue ocean with sharks and jellyfish, but she wasn't afraid. She was rather curious, eager, and having a burning desire to know every inch of him. Soon afterward, they started dating, and everything was falling into place. He was a keeper for her, and she was too good to be true for him. They were soon madly in love with each other. "They are meant to be together," that's what all people say when they see them on the street. He was fire, and she was water, and together they made the freshest steam.
But like all adults, they had been pretending. For the past year, she was sick of his lies, of his cheats, of his plays, and he thought she's blindfolded, so misguided by her adulation she couldn't see his flaws, that she couldn't hear his lies, but he was pitifully wrong. She was just long-suffering, waiting for him to see she couldn't buy it anymore, that exhaustion is eating her alive, and she couldn't breathe. She was drowning in his veins, so deep she couldn't find a loophole even though she worked so hard to rescue herself.
The news hit him so hard he couldn't believe it. He never thought of this day. It never crossed his mind that she was strong enough to walk away from him, to have a fresh start, and to get her thoughts straight. He got so used to her that he can't imagine his life without her. She completed him; she was his lifesaver. He didn't realize what he had done until he saw the empty apartment. He didn't realize he worshiped her until he saw the empty wardrobe in their bedroom. She left him nothing but sorrow, grief, and ache.
Now, he acknowledges what he had done.
Now, he is certain there's no coming back from this situation.
Now, he is devastated.
Now, his life is chaos.
Now, he will do anything to get his best friend and his sweetheart back, but he knows this won't happen, no matter what.
